AudioOur audio tests took a simple approach:we listened for loud, understandable audio. Some cameras were loud but the audio was distorted, while others cameras lacked distortion but were too quiet, making it harder to hear activity. The Foscam C2 was the only camera we tested with no audio distortion. Built in speakers on each camera we tested, except the Y cam Indoor HDS, let you use the mobile app to talk to anyone near the camera. Ease of UseTo test ease of use, we tracked setup issues and whether we had to contact customer support. Cameras that quickly connected to Wi Fi and had simple setup steps scored well.

When Nest Protect detects threats in your home, it sends a notification directly to your smartphone. These real time notifications allow you to handle the situation from wherever you are – you won’t always be home when disaster strikes – and contact local emergency services if necessary. Our testers determined that Nest Protect was by far the easiest to set up, mount and connect because of its intuitive design and clear instructions. It took just a few minutes from opening the package to having a fully functional smoke detector ready to go. After you connect this Wi Fi smoke alarm to the internet, you can control, monitor and test the device remotely though a useful mobile app. The app also tracks battery life and allows the unit to test itself on a monthly basis.

The Nest Tag is a key fob style device that can arm or disarm the system when in proximity with the base station – other options for arming include a passcode, Google Assistant, and the Nest App. The sensor is Stick Nest Detect, which is a versatile piece of hardware, as each one can be used to secure a window, door, or even a wall, as it detects motion, with additional sensors available for $49. All of these sensors feed their information through the base station to the Nest App. Nest Secure works over Wi Fi, but cellular access as a backup is a $5 additional monthly option. The system can also be expanded with options for indoor and outdoor cameras, and compatible Yale electronic locks. While this system is designed to be used for self monitoring through the Nest App, there is also an option for professional monitoring via Brinks Home Security for $29 monthly, or $19 monthly with a three year contract more about that later.
